Summer Software Explorers Program at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission System (RMS)
SummerSoftwareExplorers2021.pdf

All local area high school and students transitioning to high school in the fall (grades 7-12) studying math or science are invited to be part of the Summer Software Explorers Program at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission System (RMS) in Owego, NY. The goal of this coed program is to provide a better understanding of career opportunities in engineering, science and business through hands-on projects, guest speakers and discussions.

This summer we will be running this program virtually, starting in July and running through August. The program is designed for beginner and intermediate students. The first track is the beginner track focused on the building blocks of software. This will be taught through projects that are open-ended and allow creativity to allow students to move at their own pace and challenge themselves. We will have projects that focus on simple graphics, mathematics and physics, and state machines. The second track will be the intermediate class looking at more advanced programming concepts and some theory taught through a series of challenges. We will be programming in Python, a powerful high-level programming language that is easy to learn and free to use, and used at many companies, including Lockheed Martin. No programming experience needed for the beginner course and some previous exposure to programming, such as prior completion of the beginner course, suggested for the intermediate class.

Since this program will be online, it is expected the student will have access to a computer during the time of the meeting and they can use the toolsets required. At this time, we are still determining all tools, but ability to use Zoom (a cloud-based conferencing software) and a web browser are a minimum, and the ability to install the Python tools is optional but recommended.

The group will meet on Every Tuesday from July 13th and will end on August 31st, 2021. Adult advisors will be present at each meeting to assist students with projects and to guide discussions. This year there will be no registration fee. Spaces are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The initial meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 13th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. online. This meeting will provide an overview of the program and the Lockheed Martin staff and resources that support the program. Students will also have the chance to ask questions and share topics of interest. Time allowing, we will jump right into the lessons during this initial meeting to make the most of the time the course is scheduled for. Each follow on meeting will use the same time slot of 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
