WELCOME TO MISS CHAPMAN'S FIRST GRADE!
~~2012 is here!~~
What's happening in First Grade? Let's take a peek!
Working with Words: This block will allow us to do word building activities, work with high frequency words, receive a daily dose of vocabulary and work on spelling those words we will read, say, hear, and write! Spelling tests will be administered on Wednesdays. Those showing successful understanding of the weekly words will not need to retake the test on Friday. Those needing a little more practice will be given the opportunity on Fridays. :-)
Guided Reading: This block gives students the opportunity to read materials that are leveled to their needs. The books are high-interest materials that will aid in decoding, fluency and comprehension, while developing a love for reading!
Shared Reading: This block will allow us to enjoy grade level text in a variety of formats. From partner reading, choral reading and small group reading, just to name a few, this block is always a favorite part of the day in first grade!
Math: Our district uses the Everyday Math program. The results of this program are spectacular! You will be amazed as to what your child will be able to do/understand with math concepts! Stay tuned for more details! We are getting to begin Unit 6 already!
Writing: This time of our day will give us a chance to share our thoughts through writing. Traits of writing will be taught through mini-lessons and students will be given the opportunity to practice applying those traits. These include word choice, voice, ideas, organization of their writing, sentence fluency and conventions. As the year progresses, students will share their writings through a more formal trait, presentation.
Science/Social Studies: We are continuing to learn the properties of various materials, as well as states of matter. Ask your child about the ice cream experiment!
