Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. --Steve Jobs

Reading

Our school purchased a new basal reading program called Journeys last year.  This program, as well as PA state standards will guide my instruction.  This series includes phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, comprehension, and writing using six traits terminology.  We will also dedicate 45 minutes per day to small group instruction reading instruction and independent center work.

Everyday Math

Athens Area School District has used this program for several years. The program offers a standards based spiraling curriculum. This means that children will be given several opportunities to learn a concept throughout the year, as well as throughout grade levels. This program offers children the opportunity to learn through game play, as well as the use of manipulative tools.

A family letter will be sent home at the beginning of each unit. This letter should be kept in a place where it can be reviewed as it contains explanations of concepts and vocabulary we are working on, as well as answers to Home-Links.

There will be a Math Home Link daily as part of our homework. It will review the concept we are working on. Please help your child complete this link.

There is also a focus on learning math facts. By the end of the year, students should know:

  • Addition facts with sums to 10
  • Doubles facts
  • Minus 0 facts
  • Minus 1 facts
  • Basic subtraction facts

Homework

We will have nightly homework except on holidays and Fridays.  I have found the Homework Notebook a beneficial organizational and communication tool.  Please be sure it is returned to school with your child daily with the homework folder.

Lunch Money

Time is of the essence! Therefore, please be sure you place your child's lunch money in an envelope labeled with your child's name and the amount in the envelope. This will allow me to collect items efficiently.

Focus Wall

Click the link below to see our focus wall for reading. It contains the comprehension skill, sight words, and grammar skill we are working on for the week.

Holiday Parties

We will have four scheduled parties throughout the year. We will celebrate Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the 100th Day of School. I will collect $5.00 from each child and purchase supplies for these parties.

Birthday Parties

If you wish your child to celebrate a birthday here at school, I ask that you provide the treat during our regular snack time. We usually snack at about 9:10. This will cut down on the loss of valuable instructional time.
